The three sisters, Mandy, Emma, and Jill, are as close as can be, despite living hundreds of miles apart. Growing up together on the island of Nantucket, Mandy is the only one who remained on the island, while Jill lives a glamorous life in Manhattan as a co-owner of a successful executive search firm, and Emma resides in Arizona, working as an elementary school teacher and aspiring photographer.
Jill, in her mid-thirties and never married, is often thought to have something more than a friendly relationship with her partner, Nick, as she spends more time with him than anyone else. However, their bond is purely platonic, with Nick embracing the bachelor lifestyle in New York City. Emma, on the other hand, has been married to her college professor husband, Peter, for over fifteen years, but has recently noticed him growing distant, unaware of the surprising secret he is about to share, which will turn her world upside down.
Mandy followed her high school sweetheart, Cory, to Boston College, and they married shortly after graduation, settling in Dover, just outside of Boston. Cory joined a successful hedge fund, while Mandy took a job at a financial services firm, quitting a year later to care for their firstborn, Blake. Two years later, when their second child, Brooke, was born, Cory left to open a competing hedge fund, and the family moved back to Nantucket. Now that the children are older, Mandy has more free time and is eager to take on more than just volunteer work, but Cory disapproves, as he believes it doesn't reflect well on him, and appearances are everything to him. However, Mandy's discovery of a second cell phone in Cory's gym bag leads her to question what is truly going on.
When their beloved grandmother, Ethel Ferguson, passes away a week before her ninety-ninth birthday, the sisters are in for a surprise. Ethel not only leaves them her Nantucket home but also reveals that she was the silent owner of Mimi's Place, one of Nantucket's most popular year-round restaurants. However, there is a catch – Ethel has left the restaurant equally to Mandy, Emma, and Jill, as well as to Paul, the chef for the past fifteen years. Before they can sell the restaurant, all three sisters must work there for a period of one year, or else the entire establishment will go to Paul, the same Paul who had broken Emma's heart many years ago.
